There’s a scene in that book in which she expresses her confusion over some inmates to whom she’s teaching a Bible class not appreciating her liberating instruction that they could interpret Genesis however they wanted, because really, who’s to say what’s true? They reacted badly to this, and responded well to the Muslim convert among them who praised Islam for its strict and clear rules. It was trite and filled with self-righteousness and progressive cliches. I had in mind the female Episcopal priest whose seminary memoir I reviewed back in the 1990s. What I expected to find was a cartoon version of a liberal Christian. I disagree with her fairly radically on many points of moral theology, but there’s something so winning and authentic about her. One of you readers kindly bought a copy for me, which I’ve just finished. She sounds on paper like the progressive Christianity flavor of the month, which is why it was startling to read Gingerich’s qualified praise for her and the book. Bolz-Weber is a tattooed, punk, very liberal Lutheran pastor who has received some national attention lately. Not long ago, I noted with surprise the praise conservative seminarian Bart Gingerich gave to Nadia Bolz-Weber’s memoir Pastrix. Yet, African American adults have a lower lifetime prevalence rate for anxiety disorders than their non-Hispanic White counterparts ( Breslau et al., 2005). Clinical studies suggest that African Americans with anxiety diagnoses appear to experience the disorders for longer periods of time and at higher perceived levels of distress than their White counterparts ( Friedman, Braunstein, & Halpern, 2006 Neal-Barnett & Crowther, 2000 Williams & Chambless, 1994 Williams, Chambless, & Steketee, 1998). Within multiple African Americans communities, anxiety disorders are classified as “nerves” or “bad nerves” ( Neal-Barnett, 2003).Įpidemiological data indicates that anxiety disorders are more persistent among African Americans ( Breslau, Kendler, Su, Gaxiola-Aguilar, & Kessler, 2005 Breslau, Gaxiola-Aguilar, Su, Williams, & Kessler, 2006). Series writer Emma Vieceli does a stellar job of capturing the distinctive voices of Max and Chloe, which is pretty much an essential requirement for a licensed comic like this. But when Max starts experiencing strange, uncontrolled continuity leaps, the pair decide to travel back to their hometown to see if they can find some answers, opening themselves up to some painful memories and difficult decisions in the process. We pick things up a year later with both characters doing their best to move on with their new lives in Seattle, albeit with fairly mixed results. The first volume of Titan’s Life is Strange series is set in the wake of one of the award-winning Square Enix video game’s alternate endings an ending where Max – a young woman mysteriously gifted with the power to rewind time – opts to save her oldest friend Chloe’s life, resulting in the utter decimation of their hometown of Arcadia Bay at the hands of a brutal hurricane.
